Spoil your ballot for an English parliament!

Mike Small in Our Kingdom reports that a grassroots, online movement is getting underway in Scotland for people to spoil their ballot papers in the referendum on the Alternative Vote (AV) on 5 May next year. It is suggested that people should write ‘independence’ on their ballot papers, thus effectively turning the AV poll into an officially unwanted referendum on independence.

I was already planning to spoil my ballot paper in the AV referendum, on the basis that it is a practically meaningless reform to the voting system used for UK elections and it will do nothing to address, let alone remedy, the West Lothian and English questions – if anything, the contrary: it’s designed to create the impression that Parliament is making itself more accountable to voters without in fact making Parliament any more accountable to England as such.

So it occurred to me that it would be an excellent form of protest for people to write ‘English parliament now!’ on their ballot papers. If you’re going to spoil your ballot, you might as well register the reason for doing so, even though only the overall total of spoilt ballots will be recorded, not all the individual comments written on the papers.

So, if we can’t have the referendum that the majority of English people want, let’s turn the meaningless referendum we’re being offered into an unofficial test of support for an English parliament. At the very least, if significant numbers waste their votes, this will show the powers that be that the choice that’s on offer is just not good enough.

  4. That is a very good idea, I will certainly be writing English parliament now on my referendum ballot paper.

  5. An English Parliament does not fit in with EU plans to carve England up into Regions, and it is not in Scotland’s best interests either as the subsidy would be cut off.

  7. On the other hand AV may give the Eng Dems a chance of being elected quicker. FPTP helds them back. I’m sick the pendulum politics of Lab-Tory.
